The town is in the Sutherland Shire, a region of southern Sydney. Loftus is named for the late Lord Augustus William Frederick Spencer Loftus, who was Governor of New South Wales between 1878 and 1885. The town’s railway station opened on 9 March 1886, and ten years later, the station was renamed Loftus. It served as a stop on the Illawarra railway line until 1979, when it was relocated to the current site.
